At the 4th INTERPOL-UNICRI Global Meeting on Responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Law Enforcement, the law enforcement community reaffirmed its commitment to responsible AI innovation.
The global event concluded on a high note of this commitment following three days of intensive discussions and collaborative workshops on progress made in the area of responsible AI since the last meeting in 2020.
More than 120 participants from the law enforcement community across the world, as well as AI experts from academia, industry, and other stakeholders, discussed and contributed to further developing the law enforcement community’s collective understanding of the state of responsible AI.
The event, which took place in Singapore from 20 to 22 February 2024, and was organized by the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) and the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI), in partnership with the Nanyang Technological University of Singapore, the European Union, the Naif Al Arab University for Security Sciences and the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism.
Key themes and topics critical to responsible AI in law enforcement explored over the course of the event, included AI governance, the importance of public trust and putting responsible AI innovation in practice in domains such as counter-terrorism and smart cities.
INTERPOL and UNICRI also released an updated version of the Toolkit for Responsible AI Innovation in Law Enforcement – a practical guide for law enforcement agencies on developing and deploying AI responsibly, while respecting human rights and ethics principles – and unveiled a web-based version of the AI Toolkit.
Reflecting on the event, Irakli Beridze, Head of UNICRI’s Centre for AI and Robotics said “I am tremendously proud of our responsible AI innovation initiative with INTERPOL and the drive and willingness of the law enforcement community to stay ahead of the game and tackle the concepts of responsible AI innovation in law enforcement at such an early stage. Given the sensitivities around the use of AI in law enforcement, I cannot underscore enough how important this proactive and attuned approach is from the perspective of building and maintaining public trust around AI.”
Discussions over the course of the event were characterized by a spirit of collaboration and a willingness to advance shared goals in this field. Looking ahead, both organizers and participants expressed their commitment to continuing the momentum generated at the 4th Global Meeting. By fostering ongoing collaboration and dialogue, INTERPOL and UNICRI aim to advance responsible AI practices in the law enforcement context and contribute to making the world a safer place.
