EU CBRN CoE Holds Successful 21st Regional Strategic Coordination Meeting in Astana, Kazakhstan

The 21st Regional Strategic Coordination Meeting of National Focal Points for Central Asia (CA) convened in Astana, Kazakhstan, bringing together key stakeholders to advance regional cooperation in the field of chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) safety and security.

The meeting was organized by the European Union’s Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Risk Mitigation Centres of Excellence (EU CBRN CoE) and hosted by its Regional Secretariat for Central Asia (CA). 

The event was inaugurated began with welcoming remarks by Mr. Maciej Madalinski, Deputy Head of Mission, Delegation of the European Union in Kazakhstan, Mr. Sorin Popa, EU CBRN CoE Programme Manager, and Mr. Bakhtiyor Gulyamov, Head of the EU CBRN CoE Regional Secretariat for Central Asia.

During the meeting, CBRN National Focal Points for Central Asia reviewed the progress made in implementing the Regional Action Plan, focusing on priorities for the region and opportunities for collaboration.

Key discussions included risks of zoonotic diseases that may be exacerbated by climate change and emphasized the importance of addressing this challenge within the framework of the EU CBRN CoE Initiative. The meeting Participants also discussed the protection and security of CBRN infrastructure and received an overview of the technical support available within the EU CBRN CoE Initiative.

“Regular meetings of CBRN National Focal Points are instrumental in strengthening regional collaboration on CBRN safety and security,” said Mr. Bakhtiyor Gulyamov, Head of the EU CBRN CoE Regional Secretariat for Central Asia.

The meeting concluded with bilateral sessions, providing an opportunity for the Regional Secretariat to identify priorities for each partner country and plan future activities.

The event showcased the ongoing commitment of the EU CBRN CoE Initiative and its partner countries to strengthening regional cooperation in the CBRN domain, contributing to the well-being of the Central Asian region.
