About the Green Prisons Research Initiative

The primary goal of this research initiative is to systematically explore the practices of ‘green prisons’ that promote environmental sustainability across various regions and countries, with an emphasis on identifying geographical disparities.

Key Objectives:

  1. Environmental Impact: Investigate initiatives that have positively impacted the environment and increased efficiency within prisons in all regions. This includes, but is not limited to, examining lighting upgrades, recycling programmes, efficient materials flow, reduction of toxins, composting practices, and food dehydration techniques aimed at minimizing pulp waste. This also involves determining the level of knowledge that prisons possess regarding their environmental impact and any related policy or regulation in place.
  2. Rehabilitation Enhancement: Explore initiatives that enhance the rehabilitation of prisoners, with a focus on environmental sustainability. Primary areas include gardening, horticulture (landscaping and green roof gardening), environmental stewardship education, nature and animal care, and green job training programmes that provide pathways to employment in the green economy, for example.
