The United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) and its partners, the UN Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC), the UN Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI), and the International Centre for Sport Security (ICSS), are pleased to disseminate the Report of the virtual High-Level meeting and the virtual International Expert Group Meeting (EGM) on Sport for Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism Conducive to Terrorism, held on 18 September 2020 and from 21 to 23 September 2020, respectively.
The events focused on sports and its role in preventing and countering violent extremism (PCVE). Approximately 500 participants from UN agencies, regional organizations, Member States, sports bodies, and civil society shared experiences and actionable good practices of sport-based interventions aimed at the inclusion and further acknowledgment of sports within national and regional PCVE action plans.
The events fostered a global conversation to help prepare a UN Guide on Promoting the Role of Sports and Its Values in Preventing Violent Extremism and a Training Handbook for the Use of Sport for Preventing Violent Extremism, that will contain specific considerations for the role of youth.
