Side-event to the Biological Weapons Convention Meeting of State Parties

On 16 December 2015 at the Palais des Nations in Geneva (Room XXV), the Permanent Mission of the Philippines to the United Nations Office and international organizations in Geneva, in cooperation with the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI), organized the Side-event to the Biological Weapons Convention Meeting of State Parties entitled: “Putting Biosafety and Biosecurity under the Microscope: Elements for an International Approach to Reinforce Capabilities and Address Fu

A seminar hosted by the Department for Anti-Drug Policies of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers in Italy and organized in collaboration with Pompidou Group will take place in Rome on 10-11 December 2015.

Participants of the twentieth session of the Conference of States Parties to the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) were briefed in the margins of the Conference on the past, present and likely future developments in robotics and the technological trend toward increasingly autonomous or artificially intelligent systems. The event, which was organized by UNICRI together with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and the Hague Security Delta (HSD), took place in the seat of the OPCW in the city of The Hague.

A workshop on Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear (CBRN) risk mitigation took place at Dar es Salaam on 2 November 2015, within the framework of the European Union (EU) CBRN Risk Mitigation Centres of Excellence (CoE) Initiative.

Within the framework of the European Union Chemical Biological Radiological and Nuclear Risk Mitigation Centres of Excellence (EU CBRN CoE) initiative, and following the request of the National Focal Point of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), UNICRI organized the second workshop in order to provide guidance to the country in the development of its National CBRN Action Plan (NAP) using the methodology developed by UNICRI.

The United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) in cooperation with the United Nations Office for Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has convened an international expert meeting on the community oriented approach to prevent and counter violence and crime in urban settings. The meeting is taking place at UNICRI HQs from 16 to 18 November 2015 and sees the participation of experts and law enforcement representatives from several countries.

The United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) is organizing a new course focused on crimes against the environment. The course, which will be held at the United Nations Campus in Turin on 21-22 January 2015, is tailored to journalists and chief information officers, as well as those who want to specialize in this area.

A specialized CBRN Awareness Course has been released online by the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies in cooperation with UNICRI.

The President of the National Italian Municipalities (ANCI) and Mayor of Turin, Mr. Piero Fassino, and the Director of the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI), Ms. Cindy J. Smith, met at the City Hall of Turin for the signing of the agreement between ANCI and UNICRI.

The agreement aims to lay the foundation for the cooperation between the two organizations in order to promote urban security, in particular by preventing crime, reducing vulnerabilities and promoting development and human rights.
