Round table: intercultural integration models

The round table meeting titled "Intercultural Integration Models" will take place in Rome on 7 June 2017. The event has been organised by the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) in cooperation with the Italian Institute of Oriental Studies (ISO) of Sapienza University on the occasion of the Sustainable Development Festival, promoted by the Italian Sustainable Development Association (Asvis-Alleanza italiana). Within the framework of the Festival several events are taking place throughout the country.
The round table will be structured in three sections - "Migration and Development”, “Migration and Citizenship” and ”Identity and Prevention of Radicalisation” - and will be moderated by professor Giorgio Milanetti, who also coordinates the University Research Project C26A15STH7: Understanding radicalism in religious identity and politics of power within and across South Asian borders. It is in this context that the conference has been promoted.
This meeting is an opportunity to use different perspectives to discuss integration as a tool to oppose both radicalisation and phenomena such as hate speeches and crimes.
For many years UNICRI has involved civil society as a main actor in the development of programs aimed to prevent and hinder radicalisation. Moreover, the institute supports the Member States during the rehabilitation and social reintegration processes of convicted violent extremist prisoners. One of the partner countries involved in this effort is Mali, where a set of activities designed to strengthen the rehabilitation process has been launched.
UNICRI has also developed a number of multidisciplinary actions, mainly addressed at fostering skills to oppose hate speech and crime by reinforcing the implementation of rules and supporting civil society.
