A senior level official with many years of experience in international organizations and the private sector, Ms. Bettina Tucci Bartsiotas, will lead the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI). The new Director a.i. of UNICRI brings to the Institute a wealth of senior-level experience in the management of complex international organizations, with emphasis on strategic planning, programme design, budgeting and finance.
On 20 - 24 August, Puebla has hosted the 6th workshop on tourism security in Mexico. The meeting is part of the Tourism security programme 2016-2019 in Central America and the Caribbean funded by the Government of Canada and implemented by the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) and the Inter-American Committee against Terrorism of the Organization of the American States (OEA – CICTE), in cooperation with the partner countries.
On 9 – 10 August UNICRI participated in the 2018 Meeting of Experts of the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC) held at the Palais des Nations, in Geneva. More specifically, the Institute took part to the session Review of Developments in the Field of Science and Technology Related to the Convention (MX2). In its presentation during the plenary session, representatives of UNICRI described the primary goals, the working methodology and the geographical dimension of the International Network on Biotechnology (INB).
Today, 30 July 2018, marks the fifth World Day against trafficking in persons, which represents an important opportunity to reflect on our shared responsibility and show solidarity with the victims of this crime.

The first global meeting to examine the opportunities and risks of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robotics for law enforcement was organized by INTERPOL’s Innovation Centre and the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI), through its Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics in Singapore on 11 and 12 July.
The new Report “The State of Knowledge of Crimes that have Serious Impacts on the Environment” has been published by the United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) and the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI).
On 5-6 September 2018, UNICRI, in cooperation with the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), held the 2nd INB Network Partners Meeting at the Palais des Nations, in Geneva. The partners participating in the meeting represented universities and research institutes from 9 countries and several international organizations, including the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) and the World Health Organization (WHO).
The United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) and the South African Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation (The Hawks) have organised a 3-day specialised training to enhance the capacity of South African law enforcement and judiciary professionals in countering the threat posed by the involvement of transnational organised crime in the precious metals and gemstones supply chains.
