The identification of common practices and standards to protect tourism security is a key aspect to harmonize policies for the protection of vulnerable targets and crowded spaces.
In the last decades, many terrorist attacks were perpetrated in public places against soft targets. Attacks occurring during sports events are particularly hideous as sports have historically played a significant role in the dissemination of positive values across civilizations and cultures, especially for young people.
The United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) hosted a high-level virtual event to launch five new specialized guides (modules) dedicated to the protection of particularly vulnerable targets against terrorist attacks. While “vulnerable targets” refers both to critical infrastructure (e.g. public transportation systems, energy sector) and public places or ‘soft targets’ (e.g. tourist venues, urban centers, religious sites), these guides focus on the latter.
The identification of common practices and standards to protect tourism security is a key aspect to harmonize policies for the protection of vulnerable targets and crowded spaces.
The main focus of the project was the development of practices to ensure crime and terrorism prevention through an innovative and holistic approach, involving different public agencies and the private sectors, in line with the GCTF Antalya Memorandum and the SC Resolution 2396.

"Coordinating National Research Programmes on Security during Major Events in Europe" (EU-SEC, 2004-2008), funded by the European Commission - DG Research and Technological Development, within the framework of the ERA-NET Programme, supported EU efforts concerning security during major events.
IPO Americas is a regional initiative launched in 2007 by the Organization of American States (OAS) and the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) to improve the cooperation of OAS Member States in the field of major events security, in compliance with the UN ECOSOC Resolution E/2006/28.
The UNICRI worldwide programme on Major Events Security, launched in 2002 and backed by the UN ECOSOC Resolution 2006/28, is aimed at providing technical assistance to policy-makers and practitioners in planning the security of Major Events, with a specific focus on coordination methodologies and standards.
