Carlos Castresana Fernández
Carlos Castresana Fernández became a member of the Board of Trustees of the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) in November 2014 and served his first term up to October 2019. He is serving his second term from October 2019 to November 2024.
Mr. Castresana is a Public Prosecutor since 1989. He serves at the Court of Auditors of Spain since 2020.
He served as Prosecutor of the Supreme Court in the Criminal Affairs Section from 2005, was Special Prosecutor against Corruption from 1995 to 2005, and worked in the Special Prosecution Office against Drug Trafficking from 1993 to 1995.
From 2007 to 2010 he was Commissioner of the International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala, with the category of UN Assistant-Secretary-General.
Since 1990 Mr. Castresana has worked as a Consultant and Senior Expert for the European Union, the Council of Europe, the UNDPA, UNDP, UNODC, UN Women, the World Bank, the Organization of American States, and several national Agencies for cooperation in criminal matters, anti-corruption, human rights and transitional justice.
Mr. Castresana holds a Law degree from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and did his graduate studies at the Institut International des Droits de l’Homme in Strasbourg, France. He has honorary doctorates from the Universidad Central de Chile, and the Universidad de Guadalajara and the National Institute of Criminal Sciences from Mexico.
